After Microsoft moved its branding from Office 365 to Microsoft 365, it took us a little time to get with the program. Maybe six years. We resisted renaming the Office 365 for IT Pros eBook because we felt that moving to Microsoft 365 for IT Pros implies coverage of the Windows operating system, which is not our focus.
In the end, Microsoft solved the problem by applying the Microsoft 365 name to many broadly across its cloud services and apps. Or perhaps we’re just a bit slow. In any case, we’ve just published Microsoft 365 for IT Pros (2027 edition), the thirteenth book in a series going back to May 2015, available from Gumroad.com.
Table of Contents
Two New eBooks
The important structural change that we’ve made for the 2027 edition is the introduction of two new eBooks created from content that was already in the “main book” together with lots of new material.
- The Microsoft Purview content is presented in a new seven-chapter, 330-page book called Microsoft Purview for IT Pros. The book covers data lifecycle management, eDiscovery, data loss prevention, information protection, communication compliance and more. It’s sometimes said that Purview is the most challenging part of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem to master because it requires detailed knowledge of both the workloads and Purview solutions. We aim to provide the necessary information to allow tenant administrators work with Purview in an effective and efficient manner.
- The Power Platform content is now in a new 120-page eBook called Power Platform for IT Pros (2027 edition). The book covers administration and governance of all parts of Microsoft Power Platform, including Dataverse, environments, solutions, and application lifecycle management, plus securing and governing the platform with DLP policies and tenant controls. There’s detailed focus on administering Power Apps, Power Automate and AI Builder; building Copilot Studio agents; and managing Power Pages and Power BI with Microsoft Fabric.
Splitting content out of the main book might seem unusual. However, we learned from the experience of moving most of our PowerShell content into its own book that this approach:
- Makes the main book easier to manage by reducing it from a mega 1300-odd pages. The current book is just over 900 pages, which means that we can manage changes and generate files faster.
- Gives important topics a focus. Instead of being presented alongside the information about Microsoft 365 workloads, PowerShell, Power Platform, and Purview have distinct identities within the Microsoft 365 for IT Pros bundle. Authors are no longer constrained by the space available within the main book and can add the material which they think should be in the book.
We’ve updated the Automating Microsoft 365 with PowerShell (2027 edition) eBook with even more practical examples and explanations about how to use PowerShell to automate common Microsoft 365 operations. This book contains the most comprehensive treatment of how to use the Microsoft Graph and Microsoft Graph PowerShell SDK with Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, Planner, and more. See our announcement about the 2027 edition of the PowerShell eBook for more detail.
A New AI and Agents Chapter
Microsoft 365 for IT Pros features a new Managing AI and Agents. Microsoft continues to invest billions in AI, and, ready or not, they’re delivering dozens of AI features each month that tenant admins have to understand and deal with. We included lots of information about Microsoft 365 Copilot in previous editions. Even though still only about 5% of the Microsoft 365 installed base have bought Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses, it’s time to give the topic its own chapter.
Managing AI and Agents explains the architecture and licensing structure behind Microsoft’s AI offerings, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Agent 365, and Work IQ. It covers using the various components of the Copilot Control System to plan, deploy, manage, and monitor Copilot day to day; in addition, it addresses controlling your costs for the service by explaining Copilot Credits and Microsoft’s cost management tools. The chapter also covers Microsoft’s Agent 365, the platform Microsoft hopes tenants will adopt to manage the use of both legitimate and shadow AI agents.
During the 2019-2021 period, Teams experienced massive growth in functionality and new features. We’re seeing much the same rate of change for AI and Agents today and it will be interesting to see how the chapter evolves over the coming year.
